Natural Acne Solutions Targeted Spot Treatment by Burt’s Bees

acne Looking for a natural zit-zapper? Oftentimes a dab of tea tree oil will do the trick, but this spot treatment from Burt’s Bees contains .75% salicyclic acid from the bark of the Black Willow tree (Salix negri), which will really help unclog pores and get rid of those pesky pimples.  We know salicyclic acid is often a main ingredient in anti-acne products, and it does get rid of zits, but what is the difference between natural and man-made salicyclic acid? If you have had bad reactions to salicyclic acid in the past, this natural version may not be any better.  But if you know salicyclic acid is your go-to for diminishing acne, we reccommend this product over others containing it.  Although its not organic, it is well formulated, 100% natural, and works well to dry up pimples without leaving our skin red, irritated, or flaky.  Applying once morning and night seems to be all that is needed, but when a bad breakout occurs applying more generously should not have any negative results.   It smells a bit antiseptic but not overbearingly so, and is an amber colored liquid.  Even if you dont have bad skin, it will be worth it to keep a bottle of this in your cabinet.   It costs about $10 for .26 ounces, and it kind of trickles out of the bottle, so in our opinion would be better with a roller-applicator at the top.  Not sure if Burt will get the message, as Burt’s Bees has been owned by Clorox since late 2007, but we will continue to appreciate this product as one of our favorite anti-acne staples.

Ingredients: Active Ingredient: Salicylic Acid (0.75%) Inactive Ingredients: alcohol denat., citrus medica limonum (lemon) peel oil, water, calendula officinalis flower extract, achillea millefolium (yarrow) extract, borago officinalis (borage) extract, carum petroselinum (parsley) extract, foeniculum vulgare (fennel) fruit oil, salix nigra (willow) bark extract, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) leaf oil, eucalyptus globulus leaf oil, juniperus communis fruit oil

Natural Whitening Toothpaste with Tea Tree Oil by Tea Tree Therapy

tea tree therapy toothpaste Use only a small amount of this paste and your teeth will still feel fresh and clean after you brush.  It has virtually no foaming properties and non-standard taste so it may be a bit of a change from traditional toothpaste, but the tea tree oil seems to be a great natural stain remover. The main ingredient is Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate which is basically a salt that the label says is a “low abrasive cleanser.”  This explains the flavor, which is somewhat salty and somewhat antiseptic (from the tea tree oil) but we don’t mind it.  It also contains Hydrated Silica which could possibly be damaging to tooth enamel.  After a month of using this product 2-3 times a day, our teeth still appear white and cavity-free, but only a trip to the dentist will tell.

About $5.25 for a 3 oz tube.

Ingredients: Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate, Sorbitol, Purified Water, Hydrated Silica, Glycerin, Dicalcium Phosphate, Natural Mint Flavor, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan), Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil ) 0.4%, Papain, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Citric Acid, Zinc Oxide

Vanilla Grapefruit Healthy Deodorant by Lavanila Laboratories

lavanillaAnother great natural deodorant choice for ladies, this product by Lavanila Laboratories is in a round, wide, solid form. The pretty packaging is nice, but what we really like is the scent and odor control.  The deodorant goes on smooth and feels powdery fresh on your skin, and smells like a tangy citrus/vanilla musk blend.  It is a powerful aroma that we noticed stayed with us during the day and saved us during those sweaty moments, but we are also looking forward to trying one of the other scents in hope that it will be more subtle.  The word on the street is that the passionfruit and pure vanilla scents are a bit milder.  Available in Vanilla Passionfruit, Pure Vanilla, Vanilla Blackberry, Vanilla Lavender, and Vanilla Coconut

It’s about $18, but worth it if you like the way it smells, and with so many scent options it shouldn’t be difficult to find one that is right for you.

Lavanila Laboratories claims that this product contains NO Petrochemicals, Pthalates, Propylene Glycol, Mineral Oils, Silicone, Synthetic Dyes, Sulfates, or Parabens.  It is clinically tested, dermatologist recommended, packaging is 100% recyclable, and not tested on animals.

Ingredients:  Aloe barbadensis leaf juice (Aloe juice, water/aqua), Propanediol (Corn derived), Zea mays (Corn) starch, Sodium stearate (Coconut derived), Silica, Carrageenan (Seaweed derived), Stearyl behenate (Coconut derived), Citrus medica limonum (Lemon peel oil), Inulin (Artichoke derived), Saccharomyces ferment, Alpha-Glucan oligosaccharide (Sugar derived), Yeast beta glucan, Lonicera caprifolium (Honeysuckle) flower extract, Usnea barbata (Lichen) extract, Valeriana officinalis root extract (Valerian), Hydrastis canadensis (Goldenseal) extract, Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea tree) flower/leaf/stem extract, Lycium barbarum fruit extract (Goji berry), Botanical fragrance blend.

Calendula Blossom Natural Deodorant Spray by Aubrey Organics

Aubrey-Organics-Calendula-Blossom-Natural-Deodorant-Spray_mIt seems that everyone is on a hunt for a natural deodorant that works well. We have tried quite a few, and the Calendula Blossom Natural Deodorant Spray by Aubrey Organics is a great choice for ladies. Some guys may find the scent a bit too flowery and we are not certain that it would be able to overpower the aroma of man-sweat (although Aubrey does have a Men’s Stock spray deodorant which we are looking forward to trying).
A few light spritzes under each arm in the morning leaves skin feeling dry and smelling lovely for several hours. If you are a heavy sweater you may need to reapply later (don’t forget, this is not an antiperspirant so you will still sweat). When the liquid spray comes in contact with the skin it feels almost powder-like, which is really refreshing. At first glance the old-school green and white packaging could conjure the thought, ”this is for hippies!”  But in our opinion Aubrey Organics is a high quality line with packaging that simply captures the natural essence of the brand, and this deodorant is no exception.  It doesn’t appear to stain clothing either.  This product is all-natural but does not include many organic ingredients, which doesn’t bother us.

Ingredients:  Aqua, alcohol denatured (38b, lavender*), glycerin, tocopherol acetate, glycine soja (soybean oil), calamine, rosa damascena flower water, calendula officinalis flower extract, anthemis nobilis (chamomile) extract, arnica montana flower extract, santalum album (sandalwood oil), vanila planifolia (vanilla) oil, pogostemon cablin (patchouli) oil, juniperous virginiana (cedarwood) oil, abies sibirica (fir) leaf oil, jasminum officinale (jasmine oil), rosa damascena flower oil.

Botanically Bright Whitening Toothpaste by Tom’s of Maine

toms toothpaste1Tom’s is known for it’s natural toothpaste, but only a few are SLS-free. It seems silly to switch to natural toothpaste if we are still ingesting sulfates when we brush, so we tried this natural, SLS-free, fluoride free whitening toothpaste with chamomile and aloe, spearmint flavor.  It has a nice taste and creamy consistency (not too thick, not too runny). It would be an easy transition from traditional toothpaste brands, and leaves your mouth/breath feeling quite fresh.  However, the second ingredient in this toothpaste is hydrated silica, which is primarily used as an abrasive.  In this case it is probably also used as a whitener, polishing away the surface of the tooth and possibly harming the enamel.  Will using this toothpaste lead to dental problems in the future? We want to trust Tom’s, but we are still on the lookout for a silica-free natural option.

Ingredients: sorbitol, hydrated silica, water, xylitol, organic Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, lauryl glucoside, natural flavor (spearmint oil and other natural flavor), sodium cocoyl glutamate, xanthan gum, titanium dioxide, carrageenan, Stevia rebaudiana extract, Chamomilla recutita (Matricaria) flower extract.
